Commonly used car button could cause drivers to crash in snowy conditions this winter, warn motoring experts

MOTORING experts have warned that a common car button could cause drivers to crash in snowy conditions this winter.

The Met Office is predicting more freezing weather this week, so it’s more important than ever to stay safe on potentially icy roads and avoid little-known errors.

Louise Bruchez from PassMeFast, which offers intensive driving courses, urged drivers to avoid using a popular feature on their motors to avoid losing control of their vehicles.

She revealed that the cruise control system, which allows the car to maintain a set speed without driver input, could actually be a danger when the mercury plummets.

Ms Bruchez explained that ice on the roads may mean it is necessary to vary your speed responsively.

Cruising at a consistent speed can lead to hydroplaning, where the tyres lose grip on the road surface, leading to a skid.

She said: “Driving in bad weather requires additional focus and skill.

“With temperatures dropping and snow forecasted, drivers need to comprehend how to handle their vehicles when the roads become slippery.

“There are a number of benefits for drivers to reap as they face the snow.

“It increases safety awareness, enables drivers to understand specific techniques, and builds confidence in adverse driving situations.”

Likewise, the expert advised avoiding puddles where possible as they can hide icy patches and potholes, which could lead to damage to your car.

Severe damage to suspension systems or tyres could see repair bills run into the hundreds.

It comes after car repair experts explained how a “backwards” cold air hack could actually warm your vehicle up quicker on frosty mornings.
