AN EXPERT mechanic has revealed how a common “flashing” dashboard alert could be a sign of a “big problem”.
Scotty Kilmer, who has fixed motors for over 50 years, also shared how a simple scan can save you hundreds.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty issued a “serious warning to all car owners“.
He said: “When your check engine light comes on, that means there’s a trouble code stored in the computer and there’s a problem.
“These problems can be big or little.
“When [the light] flashes on and off, it means it’s big enough to ruin your catalytic converter.”
The catalytic converter is a vital part of the exhaust system designed to reduce harmful emissions.
It is a legal requirement to have one and all new cars come fitted with them.
However, it is also very valuable, which is what makes it such a target for theft.
If your catalytic converter is damaged, you will need to replace it at a cost of several hundred pounds at least.
Thankfully, it should be relatively easy to work out whether your motor is at risk.
Scotty urged motorists not to ignore a flashing check engine light and to take the car to a garage immediately.
There, a technician can use a scan tool to diagnose the problem and fix it.
Scotty added: “Just pray it’s something simple like a misfire off a bad ignition coil and it’ll only cost you £40 for a new one.”
You could even perform the check yourself, with basic scan tools starting at just £20 on Amazon.
Just connect the scanner following the instructions and then look up any error codes that it finds online.
You can then take it to a garage to repair any issue or, if you know how, fix it yourself and save yourself the time and expense of identifying the problem.
It comes after Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer shared how he planned to double the value of a “future classic” he picked up for £6,000.
