Classic MG car that was found languishing in a garage for 45 years is on sale for eye-watering price

A CLASSIC MG that was found rusting away in a garage for 45 years is now going on sale with a hefty price tag attached.

The 1939 motor had been a “basket case wreck” when a car restorer bought it in 2015 but is now up for auction and it will set any buyer back £12,000.

Having been taken off road by the previous owner in 1969 when it failed its MoT, the once vintage vehicle had become a rustbucket of a motor.

Its doors and side panels had fallen off, its front seats had been ripped out and its front wheels and bonnet were missing.

Yet its current owner saw the potential in the rusting and ragged shell of a once beautiful car.

He spent several years slowly repairing it to get it back onto the road.

The cream and brown MG VA has a 1.5 litre engine and it was one of the few to be made between 1937 and 1939 when production was halted by World War II.

The current owner carried out the restoration himself apart from some engine work and a respray of paint from professionals.

He hopes that it will be bought by someone who will enjoy taking it out and using it again.

The 1930s supercar will be going under the hammer at Charterhouse Auctioneers, of Sherborne, Dorset.

Auctioneer Richard Bromell said: “To say the MG was bought as a project makes it sound much better than it was as it was in a very sorry state indeed.

“Thankfully the owner was more than handy with a spanner and undertook a complete restoration of the MG.

“This isn’t like some restorations which make a car seem brand new, this MG retains its character.

“It’s a quintessentially pre-war gentleman’s sports car and it’s perfect to take the family out this summer.

“It’s ready to attend car shows and to fully enjoy.

“The current owner took it as a retirement project and now that he has finished this one I’m sure he will find another to restore.

“This will attract a lot of attention from collectors. Any MG provides a different driving experience with infinitely more elegance than other cars.”

The sale is due to take place on June 8.
