The Blues defender came on for the final few minutes of the Three Lions’ historic win against Italy on Thursday night.

But the 23-year-old is having a luckless campaign so far, having missed more than half of Chelsea’s Premier League games.

A knee problem kept James out from October to Christmas.

That particular injury meant he missed what would have been his first World Cup.

He came back on December 27 against Bournemouth, only to be forced off after 53 minutes with a recurrence of the same injury.

James returned again in February, but a hamstring issue and illness ruled him out for another two games this month.

He has been restricted to just 18 games in all competitions for Chelsea this season.

James joins Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Nick Pope in withdrawing from the England squad due to injury.

However, Sky Sports claim Southgate is not expected to call anyone else up to the squad for Sunday’s game against Ukraine.
