A MOTORING expert has revealed the cheapest cars to insure in the UK as drivers seek to combat “rising “ridiculous” costs.
Abigayle Aundre from She Talks Cars shared her top five list of cheap and cheerful rides on TikTok.
Motoring expert Abigayle Aundre revealed five of the cheapest cars to insure in 2024Tiktok
Abigayle said: “Car insurance costs are getting ridiculous.
“One great way to save money is by choosing your car very wisely.
“Here are five cars that are cheap to insure, tax and run.”
VW Polo
The Polo is one of VW’s most popular models for a good reason, with a reputation for fun and reliability at a low price.
Abigayle recommended those produced after 2017 as they tend to have comparatively small costs across the board.
However, some specs are more difficult and expensive to cover than others, so bargain hunters should try and get their hands on the 1-litre, five-door S version.
Older examples or those with higher trim levels/more power can actually set you back hundreds more so caution is essential.
Newer Polos, on the other hand, often fall into insurance group 1, the cheapest offered by coverage providers.
But upfront costs can be a little higher, with 1-litre Polos sitting around the £18,000 mark on average.
Hyundai I10
Another motor where the 1-litre, five-door setup is advantageous, this time you need the Blue Drive S Air variant.
Abigayle recommended the I10 as a “brilliant first car” for new drivers, given the ample, but not excessive, power, simple layout and forgiving controls.
The i10 also makes it into Group 1 for examples produced between 2014 and 2020.
At the lower end, these can be picked up for about £15,000 new.
Nissan Micra
As its name suggests the Micra is a small, practical hatchback, with Abigayle praising it as a “reliable first car or daily driver”.
Second-hand models start around £7,000, making them one of the most affordable entries on the list too.
The post-2017, 1-litre Visia five-door is the version to target here.
VW UP!
VW caused the UP!’s fanbase quite a shock when they discontinued it last year, but it remains one of the cheapest vehicles to insure in 2024.
Abigayle revealed that it was, in fact, her first car on the road to motoring celebrity and dubbed it “surprisingly spacious”.
Those looking for the best deal should consider the three-door Take Up variant, again with a 1-litre engine.
Fortunately, the extra room doesn’t seem to come at extra cost with second-hand examples starting from about £6,000.
As a little extra, Abigayle recommended the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo as alternatives since, being from VW sister brands, they offer effectively the same platform and trim-levels.
Fiat Panda
The final entry on the list is also one of the cheapest, matching the UP! at the £5,000 mark.
However, to get cheaper premiums, you will have to plump for an older model, the Active 1-litre five-door made between 2004 and 2011.
Given the age of the cars in this class, drivers should give extra consideration to maintenance, reliability and things like ULEZ costs.
