Britain’s best selling cars in 2023 revealed after surge in sales – but it’s bad news for huge EV maker

DESPITE the cost of living squeeze, new car sales topped 1.9million last year, up almost a fifth on 2022.

That’s a new motor every 20 seconds.

Ford’s Puma was the No1 seller with the British-built Nissan Qashqai in second and Vauxhall’s Corsa in third.

Volkswagen was the most popular car brand with more than 162,000 sales.

As for vans, Ford was so far in front it outsold VW, Vauxhall and Renault added together.

Value brands enjoyed an excellent 2023 with MG sales rocketing 59 per cent to 81,000 and climbing to 11th place overall.

Suzuki was up 53 per cent to 27,000, Skoda 43 per cent to 70,000 cars and Seat improved 45 per cent with 32,000 cars.

Lotus registered a 784 per cent increase. That’s not a typo.

Bosses are celebrating record sales of 1,555 thanks to the brilliant Emira.

They only shifted 170-odd cars the year before.

Porsche and Lamborghini rounded off big birthday years with sales soaring 33 per cent (24,000 cars) and 40 per cent (676 cars) respectively.

But it was a miserable year for the likes of DS, Fiat, Abarth and others.

Tesla was down nine per cent.
