A three-time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medallist, Ali was also known for his activism and personality outside of the boxing ring.
But many will be unaware he also made an impression on the WWE – formerly the WWF – who have confirmed he will become a member of their Hall of Fame on April 5 as part of the Class of 2024.
That is because on June 26, 1976, Ali competed in an exhibition match against WWE Hall of Famer Antonio Inoki in Tokyo, Japan.
The 15-round showpiece, dubbed “The War of the Worlds”, took place in front of 32,000 people and ended in a draw.
It was also beamed out to 33,000 fans inside the Shea Stadium in New York.
After retiring from boxing with a record of 56 wins and five defeats, he then appeared as a special guest referee at the first ever WrestleMania in 1984.
Ali officiated the match-up between Hulk Hogan & Mr. T and Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff.
And his most iconic moment came when he struck Piper with his famous right hand.
Now the late boxing icon will be honoured for his contribution to WWE as fans heaped praise on the move.
One said: “The GOAT! A deserved honor.”
Another added: “The original sports entertainer and an absolute legend. Much deserved.”
A third replied: “Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee! Congratulations to THE GOAT! ”
While a fourth responded: “The Greatest of All TIME, now this is so freaking cool.”
And a fifth said: “Congratulations! The Greatest of All Time! It is finally happening!”
