Boffins find rare particle falling to Earth — sparking claims of extra-terrestrials

BAFFLED boffins have found a rare and extremely high-energy particle falling to Earth — sparking claims of extra-terrestrials.

It is from an apparently empty region of space and scientists say only the most powerful cosmic events — on scales far greater than a star exploding — could have caused it.

The revelation has led to space fans talking of aliens probing Earth with tech we won’t understand.

The Amaterasu particle — named after the sun goddess in Japanese mythology — is believed to be from an area called the Local Void, bordering the Milky Way galaxy.

Prof John Matthews, of the University of Utah, said: “You trace its trajectory to its source and there’s nothing high energy enough to have produced it.

“That’s the mystery — what the heck is going on?”

Another theory is a blackhole in another galaxy could have caused it.

But an X/Twitter user wrote: “This particle is a message sent by an advanced extraterrestrial civilisation, using technology far beyond our current understanding.”

In reference to the Marvel superhero transported to Earth, another joked: “Thor has entered the chat.”
