Black Friday saw Brits make 391 purchases a second, early stats reveal

SHOPPERS flocked online to grab Black Friday bargains — but stores fear a wave of impulse buys will soon be returned.

Nationwide Building Society said its members alone made 9.92million purchases on Friday — two per cent higher than last year and 12 per cent up on 2021.

Coffee machines climbed by 105 per cent

If those figures are typical, it would mean 34million purchases across the UK — or 391 a second.

Mark Nalder, from the building society, said: “While most will be happy with their purchases, others are likely to regret impulse buys and it is likely we’ll see refunds over the next few days and weeks.”

With many shopping centres quiet, it is thought a lot of spending came online.

Almost £8.7billion is expected to be spent between Friday morning and Monday night, according to analysis by GlobalData for Vouchercodes.

Currys said sales of games consoles soared 131 per cent in recent weeks, with the new Call Of Duty a Black Friday hit.

Beauty tools soared 190 per cent and coffee machines by 105 per cent.

Air fryer sales were up by 75 per cent.
