How is Barry Humphries doing?

On April 19, 2023 Barry Humphries was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in the east of Sydney.

The famous entertainer had previously undergone a hip replacement but has experienced complications, according to Australian entertainment journalist Peter Ford.

Speaking about how the comedian is doing, he revealed Barry was “comfortable”.

Peter said: “Statement to media due to be released shortly. At this moment Barry is in a serious condition but is being kept comfortable. He’s surrounded by family.”

He admitted “things are tough” as he asked Australians to send the veteran entertainer their love.

Peter added: “I reckon Barry has a fighting spirit and he’s not going to give up easily.”

Sky News host and friend of Humphries Rowan Dean says the comedian has got “serious health problems” however “his sense of humour never leaves him.”

This latest health scare comes just weeks after Barry revealed he was in “agony” following a fall at his home in February 2023 that left him needing a hip replacement.

He said the accident took place after he tripped on a rug while reaching for a book.

But he added that he was hoping to be back on stage for his one-man-show later in 2023.

‘I have to get back on my feet… I’m going back on tour later this year,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald in March.

‘The result of my broken hip means I now have a titanium hip… you can call me ‘Bionic Bazza’.’

It’s reported he had been doing rehabilitation for his hip, working with a physiotherapist.

Hip replacement complications

According to the NHS, complications of hip replacement surgery can include:

hip dislocation
infection at the site of the surgery
injuries to the blood vessels or nerves
DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
a fracture in the bone around the hip replacement during or after the operation
differences in leg length

However, the NHS states that hip replacement surgery is common, and the risk of serious complications is low.
