Barbie co-stars Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu appear to have tense red carpet exchange in resurfaced footage

By now, we’ve all seen a million photos of Barbie stars on the red carpet, from Margot Robbie‘s iconic outfits paying homage to the doll, to America Ferrera’s witty interview clips.

But resurfaced footage of Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu at a Barbie press event has got some fans raising their eyebrows at the tension between the two actors.

Both stars play Ken in the film, though it would appear that it’s not all smiles and friendship among the movie’s cast.

The pair – who are both Canadian – were promoting the movie in their home country last month, posing together for photos. Liu can be seen slipping his hand around Gosling’s waist to pull him closer for a snap together.

It seems Gosling wasn’t that keen on the move, though, as he can be seen pulling away and glancing down at his co-star’s arm.

Though it’s hard to make out the exact dialogue between the two, he seems to say: “Don’t hold me there, man. I mean, do you want me to touch you like that?”

Liu seemed taken-aback, but recovered quickly. “You don’t what – oh, it’s too tender? Fair enough,” before removing his arm away from Gosling.

People have been obsessing over every detail of the video on Twitter. “Oh I’d literally never show my face again,” one person said of the awkward moment.

But others believe both actors were simply leaning into their characters. “I think it’s their characters playing like they hate each other cause they are in competition with each other in the movie,” one fan explained. “It ain’t that deep.”

Gosling has previously admitted that although he has fully embraced the iconic role now, at first he was not sure if he had the right ‘Ken-ergy’ to undertake the role.

“I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within, and if I’m being really honest I doubted my Ken-ergy,” he said at CinemaCon 2023. “I didn’t see it, but Margot and Greta[Gerwig, the film’s director], they conjured this out of me somehow.

“It was like I was living my life and then one day I was bleaching my hair, shaving my legs and wearing bespoke neon outfits and rollerblading down Venice Beach,” he added. “It came on like a light scarlet fever. Then I woke up one day and was like, ‘Why is there fake tanner in my sheets? What just happened?’.”
