While he has, golfer Brian Harman was victorious at Hoylake in awful conditions.

In the meantime, Australia retained the Ashes after the final day of play at Old Trafford was rained off.

And fans couldn’t help but notice how the pair bare a striking resemblance.

Some even took to Twitter to comment on the doppelgangers.

One fan wrote: “Retaining the Ashes and Ricky Ponting winning the British Open. Great day for Australia.”

Another chimed in: “Brian Harman, Ricky Ponting anyone?”

A third penned: “Some day for Australian cricket- retain the ashes and Ricky Ponting wins the open.”

A fourth added: “Is Brian Harman, Ricky Ponting without hair?”

Even cricketer Sam Billings shared a picture of Brian Harman winning The Open, captioning the snap: “Ricky Ponting” and adding a clapping hands emoji.

Astonishingly, Ponting was at Hoylake this week filming a segment with Sky Sports attempting to putt a golf ball using a cricket bat.

Harman scooped the £2.33million prize by winning The Open.

It was the 36-year-old’s first Major, as he saw off the challenge of Rory McIlroy to win by six shots.

After the presentation of the Claret Jug on the 18th green, Champion Golfer of the Year Harman said: “I got to thank my wife, my family back home. I sure miss them. I can’t wait to get back to them tomorrow.

“First I’m going to have me a couple of pints out of this here trophy, I believe.

He then added: “Lastly, I want to thank The R&A for putting together such an incredible Championship. I couldn’t be happier to be its Champion.

“And to all the fans, all the nice words and all the people back home who were rooting me on, I appreciate it so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
