Argos to close even more branches in August – is your local affected?

ARGOS is to close even more branches this month as 100 of its shops face the chop.

The popular retailer has already closed a number of its UK stores as part of its plan to move away from the high street.

Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury’s will close 100 stores across the UK in 2023/24 and focus on expanding its presence in supermarkets.

It has already shut 45 branches in the last 12 months and opened up 25 branches inside Sainsbury’s stores.

And now, the homeware retailer is to close its branch at Morfa Shopping Park in Swansea will close on August 22, according to local news reports.

The closest Argos will then be in Sainsbury’s in Quay Parade in Swansea city centre.

But this branch isn’t the only one shutting for the final time this month.

Grimsby Alexandria Argos is due to relocate to Sainsbury’s on August 9 and 10.

And Scunthorpe Argos is due to relocate on August 15 and 16.

The retailer will also be closing its store in St Stephen’s shopping centre in Hull on August 8.

A new branch in Sainsbury’s Hessle will open the following day on August 9.

Meanwhile the Riverside store in Norwich and the Parc Plaza branch in Bridgend are also set to close in August but no date has been confirmed as yet.

Here is the full list of Argos store closures planned for August.

It also closed all of its 34 stores in the Republic of Ireland on June 24.

The company blamed the closure of the Republic of Ireland stores on the investment required to develop and modernise the Irish part of its business as “not viable”.

By March 2024, Sainsbury’s expects to have 160 standalone stores and between 430 and 460 Argos counters inside Sainsbury’s supermarkets.

It follows a particularly tumultuous time for UK high streets with several popular chains including M&Co and Paperchase closing all stores in 2023.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.
