An official Apple memo details what to do if your iPhone is running slow, freezes, or has “performance issues”.

There are six steps that all iPhone owners should follow to check they’ve got the best-possible device performance.

Check your network

If your app is running slow, it might not be your iPhone’s chip that is to blame.

“Many apps require an internet connection for their content and other functionality,” Apple said.

“If the network that you’re connected to is congested — for example, at an event with many people using the same network — apps might take a while to open or display their content.

“Your device can also seem slow as it repeatedly reconnects to new cell towers when you’re in a moving vehicle.”

Try whatever you’re doing at a different time, in another location, or switch to or from Wi-Fi.

If it’s a persistent issue, it may be worth contacting your character.

Close unresponsive apps

If an app has stopped responding or is freezing, it’s faster to simply force-quit the app and open it again.

Swipe up into your app tray and then swipe up again on the app preview to close it.

However, you should avoid closing apps that are working fine.

“Under normal conditions, forcing an app to close is not necessary and does not make your device run faster,” Apple said.

“In fact, an app takes longer to open after a force close because it has to reload all of its data.”

Check your storage

You might experience poor iPhone performance if your storage is close to being maxed out.

It’s easy to check in Settings > General > Storage.

“For best performance, try to maintain at least 1GB of free space,” Apple warned.

“If your available storage is consistently less than 1GB, your device might slow down as iOS or iPadOS repeatedly makes room for more content.”

You can find storage-saving recommendations in the Storage settings.

Consider deleting large apps, as well as unwanted photos and videos.

Switch Low Power Mode off

Low Power Mode is a great way to save battery, but it comes at the expense of your device performance.

It reduces the amount of power your device uses and switches off features.

Apple said that this means “some tasks might take longer to complete”.

You can tell if Low Power Mode is on because your battery icon will be yellow.

It can be switched off in Settings > Battery.

Keep your device at the right temperature

If your iPhone is too hot or cold, it can seriously affect your iPhone.

You must try to keep it at normal temperatures for the best performance.

“iOS or iPadOS adjusts your device’s performance if it’s become too warm due to external conditions, like being left in a hot car or used for an extended time in direct sunlight,” Apple explained.

“Move your device to a cooler location and let its temperature adjust.

“Very cold temperatures can also slow your device.

“If your device runs slowly after being exposed to cold, move it to a warmer location.”

Check battery health

The older your battery gets, the less well it performs.

It’s a fact for all rechargeable lithium ion batteries – not just the ones inside your iPhone.

“Over time, the rechargeable batteries in all iPhone and iPad models will diminish in their capacity and peak performance and will eventually need to be replaced,” Apple said.

“iOS can show show battery health and recommend if an iPhone battery needs to be replaced.”

You can check by going into Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

Batteries can be replaced at an Apple Store, typically for less than $100/£100 – which is much cheaper than buying a brand new iPhone.
