APPLE has fallen from the top of the smartphone tree with Samsung pipping it to title of the world’s best-selling mobile make.

The iPhone firm has suffered a ten per cent slump in sales since the start of the year despite the global market growing, researchers IDC said.

Apple has shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the first three months of 2024, giving it a 17.3 per cent grip on the global mobile market.

But Samsung sold 60.1 million phones, taking its market share to 20.8 per cent.

The South Korean brand — which launched its Galaxy S24 in January — previously held the top spot for 12 years before US firm Apple took the title last year after releasing the iPhone 15.

Ryan Reith at IDC said: “While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as leading provider in the first quarter of 2024.”

iPhones face a threat from cheap Chinese makers such as Xiamoi which sold 40.8 million to be third biggest firm.

Apple announced further investment in Vietnamese factories to reduce reliance on China.
