He missed all of last season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and last played at the top level in March 2022.

Townsend did make a comeback for Everton’s U21 side towards the end of the campaign and is now hoping to earn himself a contract with a new club.

The Daily Mail state that he has begun pre-season training with Vincent Kompany’s newly-promoted Burnley.

And he could be “looking to earn himself a more permanent” move to Turf Moor.

Burnley are also closing in on the signing of defender Soumaila Coulibaly, 19, from Borussia Dortmund ahead of their Premier League return.

The star has already undergone a medical ahead of his proposed loan move with an obligation to buy for £15m next summer.

Burnley are also set to splash out £19m for England U21 European Championship hero James Trafford.

The Man City keeper looks set to sign for the Cityzens’ former captain over the coming days.

Meanwhile, Townsend made his name in the Premier League after coming through the ranks at Tottenham.

After a short stint at Newcastle, he moved to Crystal Palace in 2016 and spent five years at Selhurst Park.

He then reunited with ex-Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez at Everton two years ago but only managed three goals in his 23 matches for the Blues.
