But the keeper has endured a nightmare start to life at the Theatre of Dreams, making several gaffes.

His poor form continued in the Red Devils’ Premier League clash with Brentford on Saturday.

The former Ajax stopper allowed a tame shot from Mathias Jensen to squeeze underneath him in the 26th minute to give the Bees a shock lead.

And scores of United fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their frustrations with the 27-year-old’s latest error.

One wrote: “Remember when they said Onana was De Gea’s upgrade.”

Another said: “Onana is terrible.”

And another said: “I used to think United’s defence was exposing Onana – but it seems he’s just bad.”

One remarked: “Watching Onana play is gonna give me a heart attack.”

Another chimed in: “Another Onana apology incoming.”

One of frustrated member of the Old Trafford faithful said: “Onana should save that.”

Another said: “Manchester United bought a basket for a keeper.”

Several even claimed that former beloved stopper De Gea – who left the club in June after the expiration of his contract – would be “laughing” at his old side’s current goalkeeping woes.

One said: “De Gea must be laughing his head off.”

And another said: “De Gea must be laughing his head off. Onana’s proper s**t.”

One remarked: “De Gea must be laughing his head off at us, what a f***ing mess.”

Onana’s mistake was the second he’s made in as many matches, the first coming in United’s 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday.

He carelessly gave away the ball to Dries Mertens in the 77th minute, which forced Casemiro to take the Belgium international out in the penalty box and receive a straight red.

His blushes, however, were spared when Mauro Icardi dragged the resulting penalty wide of his right-hand post.
