‘An absolute hoot’: Richard Wilkins on why Robbie Williams is his funniest celebrity to interview

Robbie Williams breaks into a fit of giggles before his face suddenly shifts to a semi-serious glare as he poses a question.

It was 2015 and the British music megastar was sitting opposite Nine Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins when laughter first erupted.

Wilkins caused the disturbance.

“I’m just very pleased that you’re still talking to me,” he told Williams.

Off camera, the Angels singer sputters up a laugh before a Cheshire grin spread across his face.

“Have you told anybody what happened?” Williams asked, deadpan.

“I think you tweeted it,” Wilkins replied.

“For people who don’t know what they’re on about, Richard tweeted what the name of my son was before we’d said anything.”

The Wilkins tweet in question no longer exists.

The New Zealand-Australian journalist then confessed Williams’ fans gave him “a right bollocking” over the move. Williams feigned delight.

“He is just an absolute hoot and a joy to interview,” Wilkins told 9Honey Celebrity.

“He’s very generous, if he’s on and he likes you and it’s all going well.”

Last year, Wilkins interviewed the Rock DJ singer while he was in Melbourne shooting footage for a film Williams is making

“You’re going to play all the hits, right?” Wilkins asked him a pre-interview chat.

“Yeah, the whole kit and caboodle, and then some fellow off the TV down there is going to interview me afterwards,” Williams said.

The singer changes gear, the comic emerging.

“Who we wanted we couldn’t get, but we’ve had to do with this guy, you know. I’ll deal with him somehow.”

For Wilkins, the sit down with Williams in front of a stadium crowd was “such a joy”.

“He’s in front of, you know, 15,000 people and they’re all there to see him,” he said.

“They’re eating out of his hands. He was just hilarious, brilliant and very, very funny.”
