Aldi & Lidl to cut price of household essential to compete with supermarket rivals

MORE supermarkets have cut milk prices to add to hope that food shop bills could fall and ease the cost of living crisis.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s led the way earlier this week by lowering the cost of four pints by 10p to £1.55 and one pint by 5p to 90p.

Aldi and Lidl yesterday matched that and Asda and Morrisons will do the same from Monday.

The changes comes in the context of milk having risen in price by 42 per cent in the past year.

Higher farming costs are blamed for the hike.

Tesco said that its costs for buying the product had fallen and so was passing that on to shoppers.

But with food inflation still at a 45-year high of 18.2 per cent, people are being warned not to get too excited by the dip in milk prices.

Sue Davies, of consumer group Which?, said yesterday: “Any price reduction is good news for consumers, but 5p off a pint of milk won’t make a huge difference when it comes to year-on-year food price inflation, which is almost 25 per cent at some supermarkets, according to our research.”
