Airline to scrap all flights from popular UK airport next year

A MAJOR airline will be scrapping all of its flights to a popular UK airport from next year.

Lufthansa currently flies to 11 different airports in the UK, but will be dropping all of its routes to Liverpool from next year.

The German airline only starting running flights between Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and Frankfurt in May 2022.

However, that route will be scrapped from February, despite an increase in the number of flights between the two airports as recently as this summer.

In May this year, Lufthansa doubled its offering to six routes per week, flying every day apart from Saturday.

The Liverpool Echo reports that “a lack of Lufthansa plane availability” has led to the decision.

They claim that “the airline faces maintenance work on some of its fleet”.

A Lufthansa spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “Lufthansa is continuously evaluating and optimising its entire route network.

“Due to unscheduled maintenance work on Pratt & Whitney engines in the Lufthansa Airbus A320neo fleet, Lufthansa Airlines will have significantly fewer aircraft available next year than originally planned.

“The company has therefore decided to suspend some routes from February 2024 that have not shown a positive economic development in recent months.

“One of the routes that is affected by this suspension is Frankfurt – Liverpool. Lufthansa regrets this decision.

“The cancellations will be published in the reservation systems on December 19, 2023 and passengers affected by cancellations will be informed.”

A Liverpool John Lennon Airport spokesperson said: “We are naturally very disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to suspend their Frankfurt service from Liverpool.

“We will continue to work with Lufthansa to secure the return of this important link at the earliest opportunity, once their availability of aircraft issues have been resolved.

“This route is strategically important for the City Region due to the global connectivity it brings and we will continue to explore opportunities to better connect the City Region.”

The route appears to be a popular one with travellers, who responded to the news on social media.

One wrote: Is this a joke by @lufthansa? They should reduce the amount of flights to/from Manchester in order to allow the flights from Liverpool Airport to operate!”

Another simply wrote: “Gutted!”

Those wishing to travel between the two cities will now need to travel to Manchester instead of Liverpool to make the journey.

The airline flies daily between Frankfurt and Manchester, with multiple flights going in both directions every day.

Lufthansa also offers daily flights between Manchester and Munich.

The airline also links Germany to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol, London Heathrow, Gatwick, City and Stansted.

Meanwhile, this airline has launched new flights from a small UK airport.

And these are all of the small UK airports Ryanair is flying to and from next year.
