Actress Anne Whitfield, star of White Christmas, dies aged 85: ‘She was a powerhouse’

White Christmas star Anne Whitfield has died at the age of 85, it has been reported.

In her obituary, which refers to the late actress by her nickname Annie, reveals she died in Washington, USA on February 15, following an “unexpected accident while on a walk”.

“Through the kindness of neighbors who provided expert medical support, family had the gift to say goodbye and express love and gratitude, a gift we will always cherish,” the obituary reads.

“The most precious part of Annie’s life were her 3 children and 7 grandchildren. She was beloved by her family, who were always her first priority,” it continued.

“She was a powerhouse in life and we hope her immense positive energy flows out to those who had the pleasure of knowing her.”

The obituary states that Whitfield left Hollywood in the 1970s – after starting her career as a child – and soon got a degree in communications, before working at the Department of Ecology for the State of Washington.

She worked as an activist for climate change and women’s rights and enjoyed travelling around the world over the years.

The obituary also states Whitfield ran a bed and breakfast in recent years.

In a special nod to White Christmas, which she starred in when she was a teen, the obituary said she watched it with her family over the recent Christmas holidays – on the film’s 70th anniversary. 

White Christmas was released in 1954 and starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen.

Whitfield was born in 1938 in Mississippi and was married and divorced twice.

She first got into acting by appearing in radio shows, before moving into film and television.

She was known for roles including in One Man’s Family, Rawhide, and Gunsmoke.

A celebration of life for the late star will be held later this month, and her family requested donations be made to her favourite charities in lieu of flowers.
