New AI tech that spots deadly lung cancer faster to be rolled out at 64 NHS hospitals – is yours on the list?

AI to help doctors spot lung cancer quicker and more accurately is set to be rolled out at NHS hospitals in England.

More than £21million has been allocated for the tech, which analyses X-rays and CT scans to diagnose the deadly disease.

It will start being used at 64 hospital trusts across the country from this winter.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said: “Patients deserve the best care possible.

“AI is already being used in the NHS to halve treatment times for stroke patients and to assist doctors in analysing brain scans.

“We’re building on this success to make sure lung cancer patients get the support they need, when they need it.”

Around 48,500 Brits are diagnosed with lung cancer every year, making it the third most common form of the disease in the country.

Some 34,8000 die from it every year — the most of any cancer in the UK.

Survival chances are much higher if the disease is caught early, before it spreads to other organs.

Some 600,000 chest X-rays are performed every month in England and health bosses hope the new tech will help spot tumours in their first stages.

Previous research has shown AI could detect early signs of the disease years before doctors would find it on a CT scan.

Artificial intelligence has already been used on the NHS to diagnose stroke patients and get them faster emergency treatment.

The tech is also used to provide patients with their personalised risk of heart attack, allowing doctors to intervene earlier.

It comes after Mr Barclay last week announced £100million in Government investment in AI on the health service.

Dr Vin Diwakar, of NHS England, said: “Artificial intelligence is already helping to save lives.

“This investment will allow 64 NHS trusts from across the country to harness the power of AI to tools to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.”
