Your driving instructor never taught you to avoid annoying habit on the motorway – and it could cost you £100

DRIVERS have been warned of making one simple mistake that their instructors never taught them – and it could cost you £100.

Hogging the middle lane on a motorway could see you slapped with three points on your drivers licence on top of the hefty fine.

Unnecessarily driving in the middle lane on a motorway is a breach of the Highway Code.

And with new laws introduced in 2013, drivers now face a fine and penalty points if caught.

According to the RAC, “middle lane hogging is classified as a careless driving offence as it makes overtaking on the motorway harder”.

They add that causing cars to be “dangerously funnelled into the outside lane (lane 3) to pass” is an extremely dangerous offence.

However, with it being illegal for learners to drive on the motorway, instructors can be forgiven for forgetting this important reminder.

And once those first time drivers have passed, they are at risk of immediately making the mistake.

When sentencing drivers for committing careless driving acts, the court will determine the offence based on how responsible the driver is for doing so and the extent of the harm they caused, according to JMW Solicitors.

Being caught driving in the middle lane of a motorway is a relatively minor offence and, as a result, will most likely see the minimum charge handed out.

JMW claim that a minimum of three points on your driving licence and a £100 fine is the most likely outcome.

However, if it leads to a more serious incident, then bad driving could incur a maximum of 7-9 points, a much higher fine, and disqualification from driving.

Elsewhere, drivers have been warned about another little-known Highway Code rule that could cost them a fine of up to £5,000.

With people still dealing with the high cost of living, many drivers are less keen to use the air-con function in their cars to help save money on fuel.

It’s important you are clued up on the Highway Code if you’re taking to the road.

In order for drivers to be safe, we have given a run down on what rules you need to know whilst on the road.
