Major supermarket chain to shut four shops in DAYS after Tesco takeover – is your local going?

A MAJOR supermarket chain is set to shut four of its shops in just a few days’ time ahead of a huge takeover.

On October 28, 2023, the unlucky Central Co-op stores are closing as shopping giant Tesco revamp the local places.

The stores shutting are: Uplands Road in Oadby, Bramcote Lane in Wollaton, Springfield Road in Rugeley and Downing Drive in Leicester.

Central Co-op have announced Tesco is expected to re-open the shops by November 6, although nothing has been confirmed.

Debbie Robinson, Chief Executive of Central Co-op said: “I’d like to thank our colleagues in each location for their hard work and commitment to serving their local community.

“Our members, customers and colleagues are at the heart of everything we do, so any decision to transfer or close one of our stores is a difficult decision to make.”

She continued to reassure customers and urge them to keep shopping with the branch.

Robinson went on to say: “We have stores close by in each of these locations and we hope our Members and customers will continue to support us locally.”

A Central Co-op statement regarding the closures made it clear that the company is making these “difficult decisions” for good reasons.

It said: “We continue to invest in new stores and regenerating our existing estate, opening four new stores to date in 2023 and investing over £20m in new stores and regeneration projects this year.

“To continue growing the Society and where we support communities, we have given a lot of careful thought to our existing store estate and have made the difficult decision to transfer four stores to Tesco Stores Limited.”

The statement also made it very clear to any of their staff that they would be offered the chance to work with Tesco if they wished.

The supermarket chain has been committed to creating a sustainable society in the UK in the last few years.

They announced changes to their distribution network a few months ago to “build a clear growth plan to deliver on this mission”.

Earlier this year, Central Co-op also confirmed that Tesco will be taking over one of its branches in Atherstone, Coventry.

The supermarket with over 200 shops made the transfer of Atherstone Large Community Store and petrol station to the well-known chain.

Thankfully for shoppers the store will now be under new management rather than closing down completely identical to the new closures.
