RIO FERDINAND wished former travel buddy Wayne Rooney a happy birthday in spectacular fashion.

That’s by reviving the “greatest tweet in football history.”

Rooney turns 38 today, a fortnight after returning to English football as manager of Birmingham City.

His first match did not go to plan as he lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough — who are managed by ex-Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick.

Wazza hopes to make things right when Brum host Hull City tomorrow evening.

But it was another former Red Devils pal who had fans in stitches on Tuesday.

Ferdinand, 44, spent a decade playing alongside Rooney at the Theatre of Dreams.

The pair won five Premier League titles and a Champions League together.

And they often journeyed together while playing under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But Ferdinand used the occasion of Rooney’s birthday to remind his chum about a brilliant tweet that was sent on April 21, 2011.

A screenshot showed Wazza tweeting a message meant for Ferdinand to the general public.

It read: “Hi rio do you want picking up in the morning pal.”

Rio captioned the screenshot: “Happy Birthday Wazza.”

Fans were left in stitches at the ancient tweet, with one saying: “The greatest tweet on football Twitter ever. You can’t convince me otherwise.”

Another declared: “A life time buddy that one.”

One noted: “A friend and brother, Rooney the legend.”

Another added: “It was at this point that everyone knew he would make a brilliant football manager one day.”
