Everton bravely battled on and were holding the Reds to a stalemate before an explosive few minutes just after the hour mark.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who was already on a booking, stopped a Blues counter-attack by tripping up Beto on the halfway line.
Despite the vast protests, the referee failed to dish out a second yellow and send him off – with Jurgen Klopp instantly subbing the defender for Joel Matip.
Things got even worse for Everton seconds later when Michael Keane was adjudged to have handballed inside the area after a VAR check.
And that allowed Mo Salah to break the deadlock from the penalty spot.
