Dolly Parton ‘scolded and whipped’ by preacher grandfather for the way she dressed: ‘It hurt my feelings so bad’

Dolly Parton is known for her flamboyant dressing as much as her hit country songs.

But now, the music sensation, 77, has revealed that when she was younger, her preacher grandfather would ‘scold and whip’ her for the way she dressed.

Speaking to The Guardian, the Jolene singer admitted: “I’m very sensitive, I didn’t like being disciplined – it hurt my feelings so bad to be scolded or whipped or whatever.”

But she admitted she never wanted to change her style and was willing to accept punishment for it.

“I was willing to pay for it,” she said.

She added that at the start of her career, record executives wanted her to tone down her look, but she stood firm.

“Everything I do, whether it’s my personality, how I conduct myself and business, or whatever, if I do it my way, according to what I understand and believe, there’s a strength in that.”

It comes after the county music legend told Pollstar magazine she doesn’t want to tour again because they take a lot of time and energy to plan, and she doesn’t want to be away from her husband for weeks at a time.

“I do not think I will ever tour again, but I do know I’ll do special shows here and there, now and then. Maybe do a long weekend of shows, or just a few shows at a festival. But I have no intention of going on a full-blown tour anymore,” she told the publication.

Parton’s last tour was in 2016. And with 60 shows, it was her largest North American tour, ever.

“I’ve done that my whole life, and it takes so much time and energy. I like to stay a little closer to home with my husband,” she added.

“We’re getting older now, and I don’t want to be gone for four or five weeks at a time. Something could happen. I would not feel right about that, if I were gone and somebody needed me.

“Or I would feel bad if I had to leave a tour if somebody got sick at home and needed me and then I had to walk out on the fans.”
