When he pointed out he now lived in the most secure fortress in the country, an LV representative told him: “Apparently, gangs are very inventive.”

He quipped back: “If they can abseil a 50-foot wall and drive through solid gate . . . ”

Simon joined as a Yeoman Warder at the historic site in January after 26 years of service in the Army as part of the Second Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment.

The landmark is patrolled 24/7 by serving military personnel who protect the crown jewels stored inside.

The enormous outer gates are locked each night at 21:52 by the Chief Yeoman Warder, in the Ceremony of the Keys, which has been carried out every night for hundreds of years.

The keys are then delivered to the King’s representative inside.

So it was a shock to Mr Towe, who had been living in a Leicestershire village, to get hit with the extra charge.

The married dad of three, wrote on X/Twitter: “I did explain that to steal my car from outside my house would be fun to watch — would love to see them try and drive out, past security and through the gates. Seriously though, £201 extra to pay!”

LV responded to Mr Towe’s post and he said the premium was later “adjusted fairly”.

The company insisted there were many factors in calculating renewal premiums.

It added: “The UK car insurance market is experiencing both a rise in the number of claims and a significant increase in how much they cost to resolve.

“We’ve spoken to Mr Towe and we’re pleased he’s remained as a customer with us.”
