The defender had a golden chance to level up the game in the 97th minute with his penalty.
But Toby Alderweireld saw his shot fly wide of keeper Dmytro Riznyk’s right post.
The crucial miss saw the Ukraine side go home with all three points on the night after the penalty being virtually the last kick of the game.
It leaves Antwerp rock bottom of Group H on zero points.
The Belgian side are three points behind both Shaktar and Porto as they look to battle for second behind group favourites Barcelona.
Antwerp qualified for the Champions League dramatically last season when Alderweireld himself scored a last gasp equaliser to win the Belgian league for Antwerp.
It was Antwerp’s first league victory in 66 years.
Premier League fans will be familiar with Alderweireld, who formed a potent partnership with fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen at the heart of Tottenham Hotspur‘s defence.
