Gwyneth Paltrow ‘hasn’t processed’ her trial over Utah ski crash: ‘I felt like I survived’

Gwyneth Paltrow has reflected on the Utah civil trial she was involved in – and won – over a 2016 ski collision with Terry Sanderson.

The Hollywood actress, 51, spoke about the highly-publicised court case to The New York Times in an interview published on the weekend.

Paltrow described the saga as ‘pretty weird’ and admitted it feels like it’s something she ‘survived’.

“I don’t know that I’ve even processed it,” Paltrow admitted.

“It was something I felt like I survived.

“Sometimes in my life it takes me a long time to look back and process something and understand something.”

Earlier this year, a jury decided Paltrow was not at fault for the 2016 crash after the jury assigned 100 per cent of the blame to Terry Sanderson.

She had been awarded the requested $US1 (approx. $1.50) sum she sued over.

Courtroom video showed Paltrow breathing a sigh of relief as the verdict was read, which was followed by a statement from Judge Holmberg.

Paltrow opted not to speak outside the courtroom in the moments after the verdict was read in her favour, but later released a statement – and cameras in court captured the moment Paltrow quietly whispered a message to Sanderson as she made her way out of the court.

As Paltrow exited the courtroom after the judge and jury found in her favour, witnesses say she paused briefly and leaned close to Sanderson to say something to him.

Allegedly, she said to Sanderson, who had just lost to her after the eight-day trial: “I wish you well.”

“I felt that acquiescing to a false claim comprised my integrity. I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case,” Paltrow said in a statement released after court adjourned. She opted not to speak outside the courtroom.

Paltrow’s lead attorney, Stephen Owens, said outside the courtroom: ”Gwyneth has a history of advocating for what she believes in – this situation was no different and she will continue to stand up for what is right.”

Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, sued Paltrow, an Oscar-winning actor and the founder and CEO of Goop, over a 2016 collision at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. Sanderson claimed Paltrow caused the collision which resulted in him sustaining four broken ribs and brain damage from a concussion.

Sanderson’s complaint alleged his damages were more than $US300,000 (approx. $450,000).

Paltrow testified that Sanderson skied into her. She sought $US1 (approx. $1.50) in damages, plus attorneys’ fees in her counterclaim.
