Rishi Sunak set to block new 20mph zones for drivers as he slams rules as ‘attack on motorists’

HOPES are growing that Rishi Sunak will call time on the war on drivers at next week’s Conservative Party conference.

In what would be a huge win for The Sun’s Give Us a Brake campaign, the PM is looking at curbing greedy councils from making motorists lives hell.

Mr Sunak‘s Plan for Motorists could see 20mph zones and bus lanes rolled back and town halls capped on how much they can sting drivers with fines and low traffic neighbourhoods.

It comes as the Conservatives gather in Manchester for their annual bash, with the PM set to address party faithful on Sunday and next Wednesday.

At Manchester’s swanky Midland Hotel, Mr Sunak will turbocharge his mission to turn the polls around for the Tories ahead of a showdown general election next year.

Ending the war on motorists will be the latest in a series of “red meat” policies designed to win back swinging voters.

Alongside a ban on new 20mph zones, Mr Sunak may announce a ban on cigarettes and vapes.

Controversially, the Manchester leg of HS2 could be scrapped.

And inheritance taxes may be eased.

Yesterday in a series of interviews with regional radio stations, the PM emphasised his pro-driver views.

He said: “I think what people will see, I mean particularly around where we are – my home is in Northallerton – we’re investing record amounts in improving infrastructure but also delivering levelling up.

“I mean making sure that our town centres and high streets get the investment that they need.

“Making sure that our roads, the potholes are maintained well, making sure that our bus services are running well, that’s all important.”
