I’m a former US Open star who beat Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver before returning to my own country to become barrister

AUSTRALIAN Bill Lloyd has made the journey from the tennis court to the court of law since retiring from the sport.

The Sydney native had a respectable tennis career after turning pro in the early 1970s after attending the University of Southern Illinois.

“He’s going to be a good one,” University of Southern Illinois tennis coach Dick Le Fevre said.

“Maybe the best we have ever had here at Southern.”

The highlight of his career came in the 1975 US Open when he and men’s doubles partner Phil Dent defeated legends Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver en route to the quarter-finals.

Dent reached the Australian Open final in 1974 and reached seven men’s doubles grand slam finals, including victory at the 1975 Australian Open.

Lloyd’s best performance in a grand slam tournament was a semi-final appearance in the mixed doubles at the 1978 French Open, with Trish Bostrom.

His career singles ranking was world No. 106 in 1977.

After retiring, Lloyd has worked as a barrister in Sydney.

He now runs the boutique law firm WM Lloyd and Associates in New South Wales alongside his son Matt.

“I am a practicing barrister specializing in family law and de facto relationships law, as well as children’s law. I accept briefs in all areas of family law,” Lloyd says in his LinkedIn profile.

In 2014, he had a total left knee replacement.
