On the stroke of half-time, the Northern Irishman provided a great pass to help United take the lead.

Evans pinged the ball into the box with his left foot, dropping it invitingly over Fernandes’ shoulder.

The United skipper did the rest, brilliantly volleying it into the back of the net.

While Fernandes’ strike was excellent, many fans wanted to give Evans praise for the pass.

One tweeted: “So Jonny Evans is the second coming of Paul Scholes then.”

While a second joked: “nice to see Paul Scholes has dressed up as Jonny Evans tonight.”

Another tweeted: “JONNY EVANS. UPHOLDING THE MAN UTD STANDARDS. SO WHAT IF HIS GOAL GETS RULED OUT. HE GETS AN ASSIST FOR EL CAPITANO.”

Evans, 35, had already been unlucky not to put United 1-0 up himself.

The centre-back, making his 200th appearance for the Red Devils, had headed beyond James Trafford and in.

His effort was subsequently disallowed following a VAR check, however, with Rasmus Hojlund deemed to be interfering with play in an offside position.

Prior to the game, Ten Hag explained Evans’ surprise inclusion.

The Dutchman, 53, said: “He can bring organisation, communication.

“He’s calm, he knows the work and he knows what to do. He will get the job done to replace Lisandro who’s injured.”
