AN EV expert has explained why he tells his customers not to buy electric cars, giving five reasons that they are a waste of money.
Alex, who runs electric car dealership EV Auto in Utah, took to TikTok to share a warning with prospective buyers.
EV dealer Alex revealed his top five reasons not to buy an electric carTiktok
In the clip, he ran through a list of the top factors against electrification.
First of all, he addressed the issue of charging infrastructure.
He said: “It can be really hard to find a place to charge it, especially if you’re not a Tesla owner.
“Some [chargers] are broken, some of them are slow, some of them are full, that can be a problem.”
Indeed, new data from the Department for Transport revealed the extent of the UK’s charging chaos as over 12 million people in rural areas have been left to fight over around 6,000 chargers.
One driver even said he was left “weeping tears of frustration” after trying to find a charging station in Hampshire.
The second problem Alex looked at was a lack of options when it comes to picking your car.
Since EVs are a relatively new industry, there is not a vast selection of models out there.
This is likely to improve over the next decade, with sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles scheduled to be banned in the UK and EU from 2035, but for now is an irritation for drivers.
One major car brand is even scrapping all its internal-combustion models from next year, despite only having one production EV at the moment.
Alex went on: “Number three is charging times.
“Pulling up, getting a tank of gas is sometimes a lot faster than waiting for a charge.”
While he pointed out that the technology around this is improving, it still remains a major problem.
And it only gets worse when coupled with poor infrastructure.
Earlier this month, The Sun Online spoke to one driver who was left queuing for hours in the rain for a single charger at a service station, leaving him feeling “stitched up“.
Fourth, Alex pointed to the fact that EVs require specialised maintenance, with most garages not having the staff or equipment to handle them.
One mechanic told The Sun Online that the rush to electric motors is going to put people like him out of business and cost drivers a fortune.
Alex added that it also eliminates much of the scope for DIY maintenance, which deprives car nuts of a beloved hobby and means repairs come at a costly premium.
Finally, Alex explained that issues around charging and the relatively low range of electric cars make them less convenient for road trips.
He said: “More stops, longer stops…it takes a while.”
Social media commenters were quick to agree.
One wrote: “Electric cars are mainly only good in the city.”
Another added: “I’ll never buy [an EV] not until there’s not a single gas vehicle available.”
And a third admitted: “Even as an EV fanatic, this is an incredibly important video with points that a lot of people gloss over when shopping for an EV.”
It comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed The Sun’s Give Us A Brake campaign as he delayed the ban on new petrol and diesel cars to 2035.
Meanwhile, a test driver who attempted a 900-mile EV road trip revealed why it left him in serious pain.
