Newcastle ace Tonali breaks silence on ‘special’ visit to Wetherspoons after asking team-mates for recommendations

SANDRO TONALI has lifted the lid on why he went to Wetherspoons after his Newcastle debut.

The Italian star was spotted at The Job Bulman in Gosforth after the Toon’s 5-1 trouncing of Aston Villa last month.

Giddy fans couldn’t believe their eyes as they spotted the £60million star at their local pub.

Tonali’s Wetherspoons appearance left many convinced that he had been pranked by one of his new team-mates.

But lifting the lid on his pub trip, the man himself said: “After the game against Villa I had asked people about places and restaurants to spend a night with my family.

“I didn’t receive the answer I was expecting. I spent the night in a pub in my city.

“You don’t usually go to the pub with family but it was a special night! Fun!”

On his team-mate’s choice of post-match eatery, Dan Burn said: “People think we stitched him up but I genuinely think he just booked it.

“He must have typed in ‘restaurants in Gosforth’ and Wetherspoons has popped up. With him not knowing any different he’s booked it.

“The next day we were like, ‘Wetherspoons? What are you doing there?’ But he said he enjoyed it!”

Tonali was further hailed as a “man of the people” when he was spotted at a local ice cream van.

The midfielder is set to return to San Siro this evening as Newcastle face AC Milan in their first Champions League match for 20 years.

On the eve of his return, Tonali said: “It will be the most thrilling feeling to come out into the stadium packed with people again.

“They let me live my dream here at AC Milan but now I come back as a rival. I will have a lot of feelings tomorrow.

“Everything happened so fast with the transfer, I was overwhelmed at first. This stadium gives you energy. The first emotion will be finding it full of thrilling sensations.

“Then also my former team-mates. It will be a day packed full of emotions. I felt this game would happen when the draw was made. It was destiny.”
