McIlroy, 33, was competing in the third round of the BMW Championship when the bizarre incident occurred.

Lining up a putt at the 15th hole, the Northern Irish star was interrupted when a punter chucked a golf ball on to the green.

Amusingly, the ball then began to move around by itself, with the cheeky prankster controlling it remotely from the sides.

He appeared to be internet comedian Niko Omilana, who later tweeted: “rory mcilroy has made an enemy for life.”

He succeeded when the fan failed to control the ball into the hole.

The man was jeered by the crowd as he was taken away.

But the moment appeared to get to McIlroy, who ended up missing his birdie putt at the hole.

However, he pulled things back later on to finish with a 70 for the round.
