AN airport that was forced to close back in 2022 hopes to be able to one day reopen.
Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones has said the now-shut Doncaster Sheffield Airport was the “best in the country”.

And a meeting is to be held on September 20 in a bid to allow the airport to reopen.
Ms Jones said everything including the “kitchen sink” was being thrown at the campaign.
She said: “Under my leadership City of Doncaster Council is throwing the kitchen sink at trying to save our airport.”
“I am resolute in my determination to deliver for the residents and businesses of Doncaster who agree with me that we need an airport for the benefit of the City, South Yorkshire region and beyond.”
She added that she would reveal “range of work that has been taking place on the programme to save the airport and our next steps“.
Ms Jones previously said: “The acquisition process will take time and it will not be cheap.
“However, this airport has the potential to be the jewel in the crown of the Doncaster and South Yorkshire economy.”
Doncaster Sheffield was a newer UK airport, having opened in 2005.
Being the 29th biggest in the country, it was even once voted the best UK airport in the UK.
Airlines such as TUI and Wizz Air operated popular holiday routes to Tenerife and Lanzarote.
However, Wizz Air pulled their flights, leaving just TUI flights, only for the airport to close in 2022.
It’s not just Doncaster Sheffield hoping to reopen.
Plymouth Airport, which closed back in 2011, hopes to be able to reopen soon.
And Manston Airport could connect people in Kent, being rebuilt with hopes of launching passenger flights.
