Car insurance experts at Confused.com have asked drivers to be on the lookout for thieves after figures revealed a rise in burglaries.

A research commissioned by the ONS found 50 per cent rise in thefts since lockdown restrictions were eased.

Electric vehicles are one of the top targets by thieves as they are easier to break into.

About 36 per cent of all stolen vehicles in the UK are carried out on keyless doors using a relay device to unlock the car and start the engine.

Insurance expert from Confused.com Alex Kindred, said that locking your EV is not enough to protect it.

Professional criminals with experience can access cars “quickly and without causing a disturbance”.

Mr Kindred explained: “Many people will typically throw their keys on the side or hook them on the hallway wall as soon as they arrive home.

“This could make their vehicle more vulnerable to opportunist thieves.”

The motors pro revealed a list of guidance for EV drivers looking to protect their vehicle against intruders.

He added: “If you have a keyless entry car then it’s wise to ensure your keys are kept well away from any doors and windows.

“Keep your car key in a screened box or tin so that the signal can’t be ‘grabbed’ from the outside and used to open your car. Don’t forget to also do this for any spare sets too.”

Drivers are also advised to switch their keyless fob’s wireless signal off to help prevent thefts.

Some keyless fobs can be turned off overnight, but those with an automatic sleep function can be activated for additional security.

Other effective ways to avoid being robbed is to buy a device to block anyone from trying to enter your vehicle.

Experts recommend using a Faraday Pouch, which is a bag made of a material blocking out radio interference from advanced tech devices used by thieves.

Alex added: “This small accessory is definitely worth considering, especially if you hang your keys up inside your home against an exterior wall, as this is where car thieves will scan for radio signals from your key fob.”

Drivers should never keep charging cables unsecured outside their house as they can leave your EV more vulnerable.

The insurer company reported a shocking 450 per cent rise in charging cables – as they can be sold on eBay for up to £200.

The expert added: “During the cold winter months, many Tesla owners have noticed that the locking mechanism doesn’t work properly due to freezing.

“This causes the cables to become detached from their vehicles, making them an easier target for passing thieves.”

Car owners should always act immediately if their keys get lost and contact a their local MLA auto locksmith.
