I’m a camping expert – the little-known pre-holiday check everyone forgets that could cause a disaster

A CAMPING expert has revealed the little-known pre-holiday check that everyone forgets which could cause a disaster.

Camping holidays have become increasingly popular in the UK – especially in the summer months.

The idea of squeezing into a tent and feeling one with nature amongst the great outdoors has never been more attractive.

And that’s why one expert has urged campers to make sure their adventure, be it a trip to a campsite, or a weekend at a festival, is pitch perfect this summer.

In a rush of excitement for your trip it is easy to forget to check your essentials, the experts told Reader’s Digest.

Campers have been urged to double check they have packed their tent stakes before the long journey.

As they are usually stored in a separate bag from the tent, the handy items can often be easily forgotten.

And although they are small, without stakes, putting up your tent becomes nearly impossible.

But the experts cautioned holidaygoers that the stakes which come with your tent are usually plastic and these should be replaced.

They advise campers to purchase metal tent stakes in order to safeguard against storms with plastic susceptible to bending and breakage.

If you are not keen on seeing your tent fly away then upgrading your stakes is a no-brainer.

The experts add that you should also never forget to bring a small rubber mallet to pound the stakes into the ground.

Using a rock can easily damage your precious items and see your tent not properly secured.

It goes without saying that you should do a dry run of all your camping equipment close to home before leaving.

Even seasoned campers have forgotten tent stakes because they haven’t checked the bag since their previous trip, say experts.

This way, you can test out everything, see if you’re missing any items and put your tent-constructing skills to the test.

Campers have also been urged to pack adequate food properly, bring different layers of clothing and to not underestimate the weather conditions.

Earlier this month, a camping expert revealed the easy way to fold a pop-up tent back into its bag.

Meanwhile, these camping etiquette mistakes will make other campers hate you.

And these are the best campsites to visit in the UK.
