I went to Disneyland Paris’ new Pixar show – my kids loved the live music and there are a few surprises too

“IT’S the real Buzz Lightyear and he is actually properly flying, Mummy!” bellows my five-year-old.

Even as an adult, it’s hard not to get caught up in Eva’s excitement at the premiere of new show Together: A Pixar Musical Adventure at Disneyland Paris.

And as her (extremely loud) commentary hints, it’s a hit.

That’s evident from the off, when a full orchestra takes to the stage – not what you’d expect at a show for kids at Eva and her friends’ age.

But it turns out that is the least of the surprises in store for us.

Together features loads of Pixar favourites, from Toy Story’s Buzz and Woody to Carl and Russell from Up and even Sully and Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc.

Pop bubbles

The musical is about a boy who dreams of conducting an orchestra at school but loses his sheet music.

Lucky for him, Buzz and Woody are on hand to chorale the troops into finding it, which takes them on a magical mystery tour into the sky (a nod to Up), under the sea (thanks Nemo) and even to the land of the dead (Coco).

Obviously seeing their film favourites in spell-binding real time on stage appealed to the kids – and their parents – but it was the surprise additions that really got the cheers.

There are giant screens stretching from floor to ceiling to give the true Pixar experience – this is CGI amped up to a whole new level.

Multi-sensory surprises were a thrill too — the kids bounded out of their seats to pop bubbles that wafted into the audience.

And that’s before they ran riot with the confetti explosions.

It managed to keep an audience of five to eight-year-olds hyped up on candyfloss, fizzy drinks and (most importantly) the Disney magic spellbound.

The new production was only half an hour of an action-packed long weekend spent at the Paris resort.

We stayed at Disney Newport Bay Club, a fantastic hotel that is perfect if you have an obsessive on your hands.

Everything, down to the shower gel and shampoo caps, comes with Mickey Mouse ears, and seeing how many nods to your favourite characters you can spot in the carpet or wallpaper becomes a great game.

On the first day we nabbed a brilliant spot for the Dream. . . And Shine Brighter parade, perfect for Eva who was quiet for once as Bella, Elsa, Snow White and Cinderella waved from their pretty floats.

Much of the rest of our time was spent on rides, discussing rides, or watching people on rides to see if Eva could muster up the courage to tackle them.

In her defence, taking her on Big Thunder Mountain with the immortal line, “Don’t worry, it’s a baby ride,” probably wasn’t my finest parenting moment.

Ten seconds in I was informed, “Mummy, I’m shutting my eyes now and won’t open them until it’s over”.

Luckily for me the Teacups won her back round, as did the Lion King show and meeting Woody.

But it’s Together that she’s still talking about a couple of weeks later.

It’s not every day you get to see the “REAL, ACTUAL” Buzz fly around a bedroom, after all.
