Sharp, 37, has signed a contract with the club until the end of the current season.

However, there is an option for a further year in his deal.

Sharp will take on the goalscoring responsibility at the club after star forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez was ruled out with an injury.

The former Manchester United and West Ham striker has suffered an ACL injury and is expected to be out for the remainder of the season.

Sharp will join two other former Southampton players on the Galaxy roster.

The club already boasted former Saints defensive duo Maya Yoshida and Martin Caceres.

Sharp will also be playing alongside former Juventus and Bayern Munich star Douglas Costa and ex-Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig.

Galaxy head coach and sporting director Greg Vanney said: “Billy is an accomplished striker who brings experience, leadership and proven goal-scoring pedigree.

“We are pleased to add a player of Billy’s calibre to the team for the stretch run of the season.”

Sharp leaves England as the most prolific player in Championship history.

He scored 130 goals in 399 appearances in the division, but his total record stands at 266 goals in 690 appearances in all English leagues.

Galaxy are currently seven points off of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
