And an eagle-eyed Neville spotted Carragher had already backtracked from the forecasts he made during an appearance on The Overlap.

Carragher backed Liverpool to finish third on the show but changed his mind for MNF, placing them fourth behind Manchester United.

That shocked Neville who piled into his colleague, saying: “Have you changed your prediction?!

“Hang on, last week on something else that we did you put Liverpool above Manchester United. You’ve switched your teams around.

“You can’t change your prediction in a week! I mean seriously?”

Carragher defended himself by suggesting United will sign a defensive midfielder, which he believes will make them good enough to finish third.

The Red Devils did not impress in their 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday but Erik ten Hag is still exploring ways to improve his squad.

World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but talks have stalled in recent days.

However Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has been targeted as an alternative after impressing last season.

Meanwhile Liverpool missed out on Moises Caicedo to Chelsea and another target, Romeo Lavia, also appears to be heading to Stamford Bridge, leaving the Reds short of defensive midfield targets.
