But a team of stewards and security personnel quickly intervened and pinned the individual to the ground.

He was escorted away from the pitch without disruption to the game, which Burnley lost 3-0.

Several moments marred their return to the Premier League including a fan throwing a missile at City defender Rico Lewis.

The Clarets released a statement condemning the behaviour and vowed to ban the supporter responsible.

There were also reports of some fans booing in response to both sets of players taking the knee.

While on the pitch Anass Zaroury was sent off for a horror challenge on Kyle Walker, making contact with the defender’s shin as he sprinted to reach a pass.

Burnley’s miserable night got off to a terrible start as Erling Haaland opened the scoring inside three minutes.

The hitman added another later in the half with a terrific first-time finish, before Rodri settled the three points after half-time as he pounced on a loose ball inside the box.

Not everything went to plan for City however as captain Kevin De Bruyne was forced off with an injury in the 23rd minute.

And Pep Guardiola was visibly frustrated at half-time as he berated Haaland despite the striker scoring twice.
