The Super Mario Bros. Movie previously topped the UK charts for this year, with £54.6million.

And Barbie is on track to beat last year’s biggest earning UK film — Top Gun: Maverick at £83.7million — taking £17million more at the three-week mark.

Oppenheimer, which opened the same day as Barbie in a clash dubbed “Barbenheimer”, by fans, has taken £39.2million, enough to move it up to the UK’s third place.

Box office data comes from the British Film Institute and Comscore, counting figures for the UK and Ireland together.

Barbie joined the billion-dollar movie club — becoming the first film solely directed by a woman to do so.

Greta Gerwig’s pink-drenched blockbuster has dazzled at the box office, hitting the milestone in just 17 days.

Distributor Warner Bros revealed the film finished the weekend with $1.03billion (£808million) in ticket sales worldwide.

It makes Gerwig, 40, one of just 29 solo directors to surpass the coveted milestone — and the only woman on the list.
