I’m an expert mechanic – here are the three things you need to make your car last TWICE as long

AN expert mechanic has revealed three things you need to make your car last twice as long.

Engine oil, transmission fluid and differential fluid all perform vital functions to the running of your motor, and using them correctly can extend its life.

First of all, Scotty walked viewers through how to properly carry out an engine oil change and handed out some top tips.

He said: “The first thing is use the correct kind of oil.

“Modern engines are very specific, don’t put a lighter oil and don’t put a heavier oil in.

“It’s designed for one oil, you use that.”

He also recommended changing your oil and oil filter every 4,000-5,000 miles or at least once a year if you don’t drive that much.

Just make sure to recycle both, which can often be done at local garages or auto shops.

Secondly, transmission fluid has to be changed “regularly” and definitely do not flush it.

Scotty raged: “Don’t listen to the idiots at the dealership who say ‘It’s a lifetime fluid you don’t need to change it’ – that’s bunk.

“Just drain what you can and refill it…all fluid gets dirty over time.”

When you drain the fluid, measure the amount that comes out and put the same amount back in.

Like engine oil, you need to use the same fluid recommended by the owner’s manual and never mix fluids.

Changes should be done roughly every 40,000 miles.

Finally, all-wheel or four-wheel driver vehicles use a differential to allow the transmission to drive all the wheels.

Just like any other component, this needs to be maintained and the fluid must be changed regularly.

Scotty explained that when you do this, you have to be on a flat surface but, otherwise, all the usual rules apply.

He also suggested wearing gloves as the fluid “stinks”.

He said: “Just pump the fluid in until it comes back out of the fill plug, then it’s full.

“Make sure you use a synthetic gear oil, the same weight that it’s supposed to have.”

It comes after Scotty revealed how to make sure you’re not ripped off when you buy a used car.

Meanwhile, another mechanic explained why you should never push start your car.
