Frankie Dettori sets new date for last ever ride… which could earn him an absolute fortune

FRANKIE DETTORI’S global farewell tour looks set to finally end in December – after the jockey said he had ‘promised’ to ride Kinross in Hong Kong.

The duo teamed up for Group 2 success in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday, pocketing over £100,000 in the process.

Dettori and Kinross’ partnership has brought in over £1million for owner Marc Chan and the jockey called the superstar sprinter his ‘ATM machine’.

It is fitting then that Dettori’s final ever race as a jockey could come aboard the same horse in December.

Dettori said he had promised Hong Kong-based Chan he would ride the horse in Longines Hong Kong Mile Stakes at Sha Tin on December 11.

It was originally thought Dettori’s final ride would come in the Breeders’ Cup in the US on November 3/4 – two weeks after his British farewell at Ascot on October 21.

But the 52-year-old Italian then said a trip to Australia was on the cards for the Melbourne Cup a few days later.

Now it appears the money-spinning trip to Hong Kong for their big Longines raceday will be the fitting finale.

California Spangle won the race last year and victory was worth more than £1.6m – but will be even more this year after the prize fund was boosted.

Dettori, who would be set for a huge payday well in advance of £100,000 should the horse win, said: “Marc is keen to have him in Hong Kong.

“I’ve spoken to Marc and told him I’ll definitely go for sure because he might have a couple of others from Australia. I’ve promised I’ll go.”

Dettori has been busy planning for life after riding horses day in-day out.

He and wife Catherine intend to go travelling – while renting out their stunning Newmarket mansion for £15,000 a month.

Dettori said Catherine has finally relented in their 30-year tug of war over where they should live and granted him permission to find a flat in London.

The jockey, who is from Sardinia but lived in Milan, said: “It has always been my dream to live in London and my wife always stopped me.

“I always wanted to live in a flat in London with a gym and an underground car park and she wanted animals and land.

“After 30 years I think I have convinced her.

“I have spent all my life outside and in the countryside. I’d like to do something different.”
