The Goodwood Cup was a mess but Kinross saved my day and we have big plans in store for him

THE GOODWOOD CUP was a bit of a mess all told.

It’s not a race I’ll look back on and remember too fondly.

Dettori is hoping to kiss goodbye to Glorious Goodwood in styleReuters

But at least good old Kinross meant I got on board as he won another Lennox yesterday.

He’s just so reliable — he’s like my ATM machine!

He’s so versatile but a seven furlong trip is just perfect for him with a bit of juice.

His owner Marc Chan has always been good to me so I was thrilled. Hopefully there are some more big races left in him.

I know Marc wants me to go to Hong Kong in December with him for the big mile race. Let’s see.

In today’s big race of the day we’ve got to take on a very good three-year-old in the shape of Paddington in the Sussex (3.35).

He’s won the Eclipse, the St James’s Palace and the Irish Guineas this year and is the right favourite, but let’s not forget that INSPIRAL is very good in her own right.

She was the champion three-year-old filly last year and won the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

Coming back this year, she was only narrowly beaten when taking on the colts in the Queen Anne after a nine month break.

We know she goes well fresh, but she should have improved for that.

She’s a very talented and very honest filly who deserves her place in the field and I’m looking forward to giving it a go.

I don’t want to go making any firm predictions, all I know is she’s training well at home and is top-class.

In terms of ground conditions, we think she’s pretty versatile, a lot of Frankels are.

She ran no sort of race on soft on Champions Day at Ascot last year, but that was just an off day, so you can put a line through that.

I’ve got two for Charlie Johnston on the day as well, starting with FRENCH INVASION (1.50).

He’s not been on the track since February and has only raced on the all-weather so far, so it’s really hard to gauge what to expect.

We know the Johnstons do well in these handicaps at Goodwood, so fingers crossed he’s got every chance off his opening mark.

The other one is LOVE DE VEGA (5.20), who I won a nice race on at Newmarket last season.

He’s back down to that kind of mark now and has a decent draw in seven, so should run a big race.
