‘I demand a lot…’ Andre Onana addresses incident with Harry Maguire as fans compare him to peak Peter Schmeichel

ANDRE ONANA admitted “I demand a lot” after berating Harry Maguire during a pre-season friendly.

Manchester United’s new goalkeeper came on as a half-time substitute during their 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last night.

Onana berated Harry Maguire during last night’s friendly

Onana, 27, joined Erik ten Hag’s side from Inter Milan in a £47.2million transfer earlier this month.

And he has made a good first impression with fans during pre-season.

The Cameroonian replaced Tom Heaton with his side trailing 2-1 in last night’s Las Vegas friendly.

And when a loose pass by Maguire nearly cost United another goal, there was nothing friendly about how Onana ripped into the former Red Devils skipper.

The former Ajax star explained his passionate outburst after the match, telling MUTV: “I try to demand a lot from him because I know he is a good player.

“He’s one of the captains of the team. He’s big, he’s good with the ball so I will demand him a lot.

“He’s a great guy, I have a good relationship with him.

“He has to be ready because when I’m on the ball I demand to everyone a lot – I start with myself because we are in this together. Mistakes come but we don’t have to be afraid to make mistakes because this is a part of life and we learn from the mistakes.”

Onana then added: “We have to be very critical with ourselves. If we want to win prizes we have to demand a lot.

“It’s a big honour to be here and I’m very happy to work with these guys – Harry is a fantastic player so we will move on.”

Fans loved Onana’s passion, with one tweeting: “This guy is really good he knows what it meant to be the one number one goalie for the biggest club in the whole world.”

While a second wrote: “He’s too perfect.”

A third commented: “I think Onana will be similar to Schmeichel and give it to all his defenders.”

And another added: “My love for him keeps increasing.”

Earlier this month, Man United turned down a £20million bid from West Ham for Maguire – instead holding out for £35m.

The 30-year-old could yet decide to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.
