SKY customers have been warned over surprise mobile data charges when holidaying in Europe this summer.
You can be charged extra data roaming fees when you go abroad and near the border of another country.

Accidental roaming charges are particularly common in Europe, where countries are typically smaller than in other continents.
It’s because mobile phone signals can be picked up across country borders.
According to Sky, “If your phone picks up the signal of a different provider when you’re near a border or cruise port, then you might be charged different roaming rates.”
Data roaming charges are not cheap, either.
So, it can really hit the wallet to be charged twice for the same holiday and the level of data used.
“Common holiday destinations where this can happen are where an EU country borders a non-EU country, resulting in additional roaming charges,” explained Sky.
These locations include:
Corfu (Greece) could accidentally connect to Albania.Cyprus (Greece could accidentally connect to Turkey (Northern Cyprus).Kos / Rhodes (Greece) could accidentally to Turkey.France could accidentally connect to Monaco.France could also accidentally connect to Andorra.
To help avoid this, it’s important to always check the name of the network provider on your phone before using it.
When you land in a different country and your phone connects to the local network for the first time, you’ll get a Welcome text.
Make sure you only use your mobile data with the provider of the country you have intended to pay roaming costs for.
Alternatively, you can set up a spending cap on your data roaming, or switch it off completely.
To do this on iPhone:
Open the Settings app.Click Cellular or Cellular Data, or Mobile Data.Turn on Cellular/Mobile Data, then tap Cellular/Mobile Data Options.Turn off Data Roaming.
To do this on Android:
Open the Settings app.Tap Network & internet Internet.Next to your carrier, tap Settings .Turn Roaming on or off.
