Club 55 was ‘born’ in 1955, hence the name, according to owner Patrice de Colmont.

He told Maxim: “We chose to call ourselves a club instead of a restaurant; that way we could select the guests we ourselves wanted there.”

The club started back in 1955 after Brigitte Bardot filmed And God Created Woman in St Tropez.

Local couple Bernard and Geneviève De Colmont served up meals to crew – and the popularity of the film led to the formation of the beach club.

Now, they still serve “home-style” meals with options of breaded calamari, roasted chicken and pasta.

While it mainly has French wines, most people order the Rose, and you can even order a Salmanazar bottle which holds a whopping 9l of wine.

The beach club is open from spring to autumn, although only during the day.

Everything is outdoors, with as many as 400 people at a time.

Patrice said that “everyone is welcome” although anyone who complains should “not be there”.

It is certainly popular with celebs, with a long list of famous fans.

Kate Moss and Cara Delevigne are former guests, along with Sylvester Stallone, Elton John and Joan Collins.

And U2 singer Bono has often been caught performing there.

You don’t have to be a celeb to visit, however.

Tourists have praised the club, with one saying it’s “pure Hollywood film set but still charming”.

The tourist, who said he has been visiting since 1974, said: “If you want better food go somewhere else, if you want smarter furniture go somewhere else, if you want cheaper prices go somewhere else.

“But if you want unadulterated beachcomber brilliance in a beautiful setting with the world’s best people watching and simple Mediterranean food this is the place.”

Others agreed, saying you should go for the experience rather than food or drink.

In Spain, there is also another holiday hotspot that has TOWIE-favourite beach clubs.

if you don’t want to leave the country, here is the UK seaside pub which has been named the best beach bar in the country.
